Rob Mullins
Rob Mullins has built his musical reputation in the world with a solid string of releases in the contemporary jazz and pop fields over the past fifteen years. His rise to international acclaim as a composer and performer began with his "Soulscape" project, which earned him a Grammy Nomination for composition. Since that time, Rob has gone on to record 11 CD's of his music, three of which went Billboard Top Ten. Rob's newest release Joyful Noyz represents the finest work of his career as a composer, performer, and producer. Starting out on drums at age 11, Rob became a touring professional with a California Big Band by age 12, doing his 6th grade homework on a tour bus. A car crash at 14 (he was a pedestrian) forced a musical switch to the piano. During this time Rob also mastered the saxophone, bass, percussion, and guitar. At 16, Rob began composing, arranging, and formed his first band. After attending the University of Northern Colorado on a percussion scholarship, Rob studied theory and composition from George Russell in New York on a National Endowment Grant. The release of his "Soulscape" project brought him back to California where he is now an in demand composer, arranger, producer and session musician. Some highlights: 1999 Rob's song "Here in My Heart" (recorded by Eric Marienthal) goes to Number One on the Smooth Jazz Charts 1999 Rob's co-write with Brian Bromberg "Hero" goes to Number One on the Smooth Jazz Charts. 1999 Rob appears on Brandy's TV Show "MOESHA" during sweeps week and ends up on camera for 11 minutes playing music recorded in his studio. 1999 Rob becomes the only composer in the world to have two of his songs in the TOP FIVE at the same time in 1999. 1999 Rob appears at the NAMM show with an all-star band which included Mike and Steve Porcaro from Toto and Robin Dimaggio on drums. 1998 Rob joins movie star Bruce Willis for his "End of the World" tour to promote the Willis film "Armegeddon" and spends the summer on the road playing in Willis' band. 1998 Rob's Much2Loud studio gets busy as Rob does 21 symphonic cues for the WB TV series "Sister Sister." 1997 Rob writes "Last Day Of Summer" for Eric Marienthal-which ends up being Eric's biggest hit to that date. 1997 Rob produces Bobby Caldwell singing "Tell It Like It Is" which ends up going to the TOP 20 on the POP CHARTS. 1997 Rob records and releases "Dance For the New World" which features Brenda Russell, Eric Marienthal, Greg Vail, Wilton Felder and others. 1996 Rob begins writing the Dance for the New World CD, produces the Mystery CD for Tony Guerrero. 1995 Rob shifts career focus to producing and writing for other artists. 1994 Rob was the first jazz artist in history to perform at the Hanoi Opera House, in Viet Nam: doing a two hours solo concert on New Year's Eve, and a week of master class instruction for the musicians at Hanoi University. 1993 The Rob Mullins All Stars featuring Ndugu Chancler (drums), Larry Kimpel (bass), and Wilton Felder (sax) record 11 Rob Mullins songs live at Ocean Way Studios for AudioQuest Records. 1993 Rob released the "Music For Lovers" CD on Discovery Records 1992 Rob became a featured guest lecturer and panelist at the esteemed Conference On World Affairs in Boulder Colorado, going head to head in debate forums with Roger Ebert, and other participants. 1991 Rob met Wilton Felder of Crusader's fame, who offered to join the Rob Mullins Band. Rob began composing and arranged for Wayne Henderson's production company, and playing in the Crusaders. During this time Rob composed hits for Ronnie Laws, Wayne Henderson, Hubert Laws and Wilton Felder. PBS special on Rob Mullins, "Club Date" was filmed. 1990 Rob does his first tour of Japan, released the Tokyo Nights CD, and became a TV star in Japan, and a foreign correspondent for FM Tokyo Radio. 1989 Rob released first "straight ahead" cd to wide critical acclaim (Leonard Feather, LA Times Critic proclaimed that "Rob Mullins is destined for international celebrity"). 1988 Rob recorded his "5th Gear" album on Nova Records. 1987 Rob performed original score with the Denver Symphony in front of 44,000. 1986: Rob receives first Grammy nomination for "Making Love" from Soulscape CD Now, in 1999, Rob showcases a great all-star band in a live setting to bring you ten new songs which are sure to kick off your summer in style. "Joyful Noyz" is happy music, with some nice ballads as well. This project was and is a labor of love as we go into summer 1999. As always, play it loud, and don't settle for music that is sanitized for your protection" he quipped. A talented live performer, Rob is well known for his sense of humor on stage, and his passion for clubs, where he can interact with an audience on a very "one to one" level. Peter White recently told Rob that his jokes during his live show were so funny that he "laughed until he cried". |
