Tower of Power One of the interesting elements of Tower of Power is the evolution of band personnel. Tower of Power is, in effect, the sound of the band. Through the years, a variety of fine musicians have been keepers of that sound.
Fans of the band are often fans of both the band, and the individual musicians (past and present). Studio-session work has never lent itself to wide recognition except among other musicians, yet when not on the road as Tower of Power, the individuals who make up the critically acclaimed West Coast horn section might as well go by another name: "Backup for the World." Individually and in various incarnations, members of Tower of Power (fronted by Emilio Castillo) have recorded as sidemen for Elton John, Santana, Bonnie Raitt, Huey Lewis, Little Feat, David Sanborn, Michelle Shocked, Paula Abdul, Aaron Neville, and Riot. Tower of Power has had their share of personnel changes over the years, but the core group members (including Castillo on saxes and vocals, Stephen "Doc" Kupka on baritone sax, Greg Adams on trumpet and vocals, and Rocco Prestia on bass) have remained, giving the band a percussive horn-based sound that is not rooted in any one genre. ~ Richard Skelly, All-Music Guide |
