Dawn Catron

From her teenage days when she was dubbed "a white Chaka Khan" on the New York club scene, to her reign as one of New Orleans' most in-demand nightclub and studio vocalists, to her most recent hot contemporary jazz sound --- Dawn Catron has consistently proven that she can sing and sing it well.

Catron's heart has always been in the soulful sounds of R&B.
Her scintillating voice cuts a broad swath, from poignant delicacy to blustery power. She phrases with fluidity and grace, plumbs songs for emotional depth and wrings a lyric for all its meaning with her charismatic stage manner.
Catron grew up in Freeport, Long Island.
At age 18 she and her older brother Brad, an established guitarist on the New York scene, teamed up to form --- CAFE (Catron's Aggressive Funk Ensemble).

Their debut occurred at the storied Harlem nightspot - Mikell's. The Catron tandem relocated to Manhattan and quickly became a hot ticket on the club scene. CAFE's line-up became a revolving door of some of New York's finest players --- David Sanborn, Will Lee, Lenny Pickett, Steve Jordan, Kenny Kirkland, Sammy Figueroa.

Dawn and Brad began cutting demos and one tape ended up in New Orleans, capturing the fancy of legendary producer Allen Toussaint. Invited to cut a demo, the Catrons ended up staying four months at Toussaint's home and recording an 11-track album at his famed Sea-Saint Recording Studio. Although the finished tracks never led to an album deal, the twosome formed a band and began playing the heady, syncopated funk fundamental to the New Orleans musical heritage.

The group performed at such hot spots as Tipitina's and Tyler’s Beer Garden, at the World’s Fair and all around The Big Easy, and several clubs on the famed Bourbon Street. Dawn was honored to perform as a featured guest of Allen Toussaint for the closing act of the 1982 Jazz & Heritage Festival.

In 1985, Dawn began her independent musical career in Clearwater, Florida where she quickly established herself as one of the Tampa Bay area's premiere vocalists. In 1992 Dawn was hired by Universal Studios Florida as Mable in the "Blues Brothers" show. She has been featured at every major nightspot between Jacksonville and Miami during her free time.

In 1999 Dawn started a new CD project titled, "Nightbird" currently being released. With the release of her new CD, "Nightbird" with independent producer, Greg Lassalle, Catron offers ample proof that she is ready to edge her way onto the national scene. It is obvious Catron is ready to reach new heights with her career. "Nightbird" is just the ticket needed to boost this incredible talent to the next level.
