Alberto Alberto

 

 Once described as “the Iggy Pop of Latin music,” Alberto Alberto has been spicing up Toronto’s Latin music scene by spreading the gospel of the ultra-modern, high-energy dance music timba. A gifted vocalist with marvelous improvisational skills, Alberto Alberto performs various musical styles from Latin Jazz to Salsa, Cha Cha to Afro-Cuban.

Born November 11, 1972, in Matanzas, Cuba, Alberto Alberto began singing at the age of five. From the beginning, he participated in and won several festivals, both nationally and internationally. In 1992, he graduated from the Vocal Studies Program (Lyrical) at Institute de Superacion Professional Raphael Somavilla de la Provincia de Matanzas.

At the age of 17, he landed a spot with Orquestra Pakazon. Since then he has gone on to perform with Cuba’s finest musicians, including Los Novels, Quimica Perfecta, Los Van Van, Hilario Duran, the legendary group Irakere (Chucho Valdés), Eliades Ochoa, Maira Caridad Valdez, and Oracio “El Negro” Gonzales. He credits Ruben Blades as one of his greatest musical influences.

Since immigrating to Canada in 2000, he has shared the stage with a diverse range of artists, from high-energy son montuno orquesta Son Aché and jazz great Jane Bunnett and the Spirits of Havana to the legendary Oscar D’Leon.

Alberto is currently singing/touring with Jane Bunnet and the Spirits of Havana. Since mid-summer he has been performed at various clubs and festivals throughout several U.S. cities. He also performed at the Barranquijazz Festival in Barranquilla, Colombia in late September.  Currently in Europe until the end of October, Alberto has and will be performing at several clubs throughout Switzerland, Turkey, Amsterdam, Spain, Macedonia, Greece and London.
