Steffen Kuehn

 

Steffen Kuehn was born and raised in Germany and began playing the trumpet at the age of eight. Twenty years later he received his Bachelor of Music from the prestigious University of North Texas in 1993, majoring in Jazz Trumpet and Jazz Studies. While at North Texas, he received two Down Beat awards for being a member of the ‘Two O’clock Lab Band’ that was voted ‘Best College/University Band’ in 1991 and 1993. He has also studied with Jazz greats such as Tim Hagans, Brian Lynch and Claudio Roditi. In Europe, he played as a sideman for the Dusko Gojkovich Big Band, Al Porcino Big Band, Conexion Latina and others. Other credits include the following Broadway Musical Productions ‘Annie’, ‘Damn Yankees’, ’Phantom of the Opera’,’Evita’ among others.

He has performed for and worked with ‘The Platters’, Marilyn McCoo, Bob Hope, John Handy, Mark Levine, John Fedchock, Chico Freeman, Tim Hagans, Ray Obiedo and Kenny Werner, Ray DeLa Paz, The Temptations, Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King, The 4 Tops, Ray Sepulveda, Lydia Pense & Cold Blood, Lefty Perez.to name a few.

He now resides in the San Francisco Bay Area and performs regularly with the Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Black Market Jazz Orchestra, Julio Bravo, Louis Romeros Mazacote, Mike Zilber's Carma Big Band and many other local musicians and bands.

Steffen’s great talent, writing skills and broad musical knowledge make him an in-demand trumpet player for all styles of music. His most recent accomplishments include live performances of the ‘Steffen Kuehn Nonet’, a CD recording of the same, featuring 2001 Grammy Nominee Tim Hagans.

Look out for the ‘Steffen Kuehn Nonet’- CD, entitled ‘Now Or Later’ (released September ’02, ‘stefrecords’). His newest album Trumpop was just released at CDBaby (2008).
