Damani Phillips

Where are you from?

I'm from Pontiac, Michigan.

How long have you been playing seriously?

I have been playing seriously for 17 years.

What kind of musical background do you have?

My background is extensive. I've not only played in various music programs, but I have a bachelor's degree in classical music and a master's degree in classical and jazz.

How did you get affiliated with Six Deep Records?

I grew up with Thurman and I knew Don from high school. They were always into doing their music. I respected the way they took care of business when I came to a few of there studio sessions. They both were impressed with me as an artist and asked me to sign with the label as their premiere jazz artist and it was on from there.

What is your style on the sax?
My style is a blend of what was going on back then with the roots of jazz, and what is going on now with the music and culture.

What do you feel that you bring to the music?

I feel as though I bring growth to the music. I come from the heart and I demonstrate what happens when traditional and new school jazz collides. My whole aim is to heighten and contribute to the music and the culture.

What was your first recorded song or most memorable event?

My first recorded song was "Yaktown Nights" with Six Deep Records. My most memorable event was receiving my master's degree in classical and jazz…. And of course working on my first album.

Executive Producer's insight on why artist was signed.

Damani, as an artist, is ahead of his generation when it comes to the whole appreciation of Jazz. He is just an incredible musician period. His signing to Six Deep Records completes our musical cipher. When his jazz project drops….beware…the sax will speak for itself.
