A journey into Smooth Acid Jazz

Tony Campbell is a jazz guitarist from East London who has worked professionally as a musician for the past ten years. As the founder and lead member of the group Perception, he was signed to Talkin’ Loud and both recorded and performed live right through to being made an offer he couldn’t refuse. In 1992, he was invited to join the group Act Of Faith as guitarist, songwriter and producer, quickly establishing a reputation for the group with albums for both Island Records and Expansion. When the lead singer of Act of Faith left to pursue a solo career, Tony had already been playing guitar on the UK’s burgeoning street jazz scene. Inspired by the success of Down To The Bone, Tony assembled a new group of top musicians, including Simply Red session guitarist Mark Jaimes, and Nite Flyte was born.

Tony Campbell 's group Nite Flyte released their first album "30.000 Ft" at the Passion Jazz label (1997), followed by "Ascension" (1998). The group signed both albums to Instinct Records, where the album was released 1999 under the title "Ascension". Unfortunately Instinct Records didn't add all tracks of both albums. So if you want to have a complete collection, you have to buy the UK releases. The record set a standard for producer Tony Campbell whose free-lance production work for the label has scored him hits for Brian Tarquin, Duncan Millar and Gota.

Tracks of the album appeared at innumerable compilations like "Martini Grooves" (1998),"This Is Acid Jazz Volume 6"(1998),"More, More, More, Smooth" - (1999), "Smooth Jazz For A Rainy Day" (1999), "Sweet Emotions" (1999), "Jazz Steppin'" (1999), "Smooth Jazz Radio Hits Vol. 2" (2000), "This Is Smooth Jazz" (2001), "This Is Smooth Jazz 4: Passion (2002)" and "Smooth Operators" (2002).

The album received best critics by Robert Spencer (All About Jazz):

"This is, simply put, smooth jazz at its best"

and

Fred Scott (Contemporaryjazz.com):

"The tune "Turned In - Spaced Out!" has down beats are reminiscent of the new wave of acid jazz artists."

or

Gavin:

“Songs like “Lift Off” and “Open Your Heart” literally fly off the CD...another slamming Brit-Pop instrumental studio combo that will help energize Smooth Jazz radio airwaves.”

It's interesting how diverse critics are classifing this music. Even Instinct Records doesn't exactly knows, where to sort Nite Flyte. In the liner notes of  "This Is Acid Jazz Volume 6" one can read:

"The London acid jazz scene is well represented here, with appearances from Ninja Tune's acid phunk friends London Funk Allstars, Nite Flyte, the 13th Sign and the Chris Bangs Project."

Well, their music is just a further example for Smooth Acid Jazz.
