Soul Unsigned:EP001
(Soul Unsigned Records)
"It
all started because of a breakfast cereal packet," so says label
founder Phil Driver in regard to his new idea of collectively
promoting artistes that either have no formal recording contract
or operate out of a small independent label. This, his very first
venture bonds together groups from the US and UK and as a means
for us to access new music from up and coming artistes without
spending all of our time on My Space.
The concept works very well!
Starting with the melodically strong 'Blow Your Mind' from Groove
Back Productions out of Georgia this smooth track has a summery
feel to it. The same could be said for the first UK offering from
London producer Felix Wright.Described as 'retro soul' if you
close your eyes you could well be listening to a new track from
one of the most successful of the UK's soul exports, Loose Ends.
Indeed, such is the vibe that it could well be Carl McIntosh on
vocals towards the end of the track!! Laid back soul with a deep
groove this will definitely become a favourite of the soulful
airwaves.
The UK also provides the other
gem on this EP, the raw, punchy, soul-funk of Harambe. 'In the
Bone' is a track from the band's long awaited 2nd album 'Testify'
and is well worth checking out. All in all don't expect this
concept album to be one of full-on productions after all it did
originate out of a breakfast cereal packet! However, if like me
you are consistently on the lookout for new aspiring artistes with
talent then this EP is the place to start.
