Roy Ayers Band, formerly known as the Roy Ayers Quartet—a name Ayers found too “square” and described as “a drag”—morphed into a much larger ensemble called Roy Ayers Ubiquity. Ayers said: “When I joined Polydor in 1970, my manager said, ‘Roy, you should call the group Ubiquity.’ I said, ‘What does that mean? ‘Ubiquity means a state of being everywhere at once.’ I said, ‘That’s destiny, because if everyone has one of my albums, I’m everywhere.’ I thought it was great, so I started using that name.” This retrospective looks at a productive period in Ayers’ career, focusing on the mid-to-late 1970s, when he brought the vibraphone to the mainstream with a series of commercially successful albums for Polydor Records. This box contains no less than 5 albums on 3 CDs, including 'A Tear to a Smile', 'Mystic Voyage', 'Everybody Loves the Sunshine', 'Vibrations' and 'Lifeline', plus 3 bonus tracks.
