In October last year the 13th album of the Dutch super saxophonist Candy Dulfer was released. I saw Candy perform live many years ago, and have been following her since her debut album 'Saxuality'. She has worked with legends such as Prince, Van Morrison, Maceo Parker, Sheila E., Mavis Staples, Lionel Richie, Beyoncé, Pink Floyd, Chaka Khan and Aretha Franklin in the past. However, I only recently got my hands on this CD, and believe me, it is definitely worth it! After an enthusiastic greeting, the funk of opening track 'YeahYeahYeah' resounds, after which the quieter 'Mo' Seats At The Table' is sung by Candy, together with Ivan Peroti and Camilo Rodriguez. On the swinging single 'Jammin' Tonight', the roof goes off in the company of living legend Nile Rodgers, who wrote this track for Candy. 'Deeper' can be described as quiet contemporary jazz, followed by the funky 'Say Something'. And 'Raindrops' quietly ripples on, after which the title track emphasizes her perseverance. Candy said, “This is a personal album, not just for me, it's personal for everyone because we are all struggling with many of the same things. It feels like it's never been more important to not wallow in the hurt and the pain in the world, and let that defeat us. That's why I called this album, 'We Never Stop'.” Another living legend, bass guitarist Marcus Miller, makes an appearance on 'The Walls', which refers to the wall that former president Trump had built between the USA and Mexico. The super funky 'Perspective' comes with input from Durand Bernarr, Aron Hodek and Philip Lassiter. The romantic mid-tempo track 'Since I Found U' is the next song, followed by the soft 'Afraid For More'. With 'No Time For This' the funk comes to the fore again, and 'The Climb' turns out to be a romantic ballad. The instrumental track 'Convergency', written by Nile Rodgers and Philippe Saisse, is the closing track, on which Candy plays a nice song with these two gentlemen. It is therefore clear that Candy is far from sung and played out. An absolute must for those who love funky soul jazz and super saxophone sound. |
