On September 30, this latest project by multiple Grammy nominated musicians (guitarist) Robben Ford and (saxophonist) Bill Evans was released. In 2019, after a joint world tour, they released the collaboration 'The Sun Room', and it is now jazz rock's turn. Evans says: “Every now and then, like-minded musicians can get together in the studio or on the same stage and make interesting music together. It is the mixing of each other's influences and styles, and the will to create something new and fresh that can make this “creative encounter” something special. I believe that Robben and I share the same ideology. We both love all types of music, be it classic blues, soul, rock and roll, you name it. This openness to combining different types of music and creating something musical and special is what brought me and Robben together in the first place. Robben composed some of the most inspiring music I've played in a long time. Our writing styles blend seamlessly.” With the help of bassist Darryl Jones (The Rolling Stones) and drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan) this new project has become a fact. Ford took care of the production and the CD opens with the funky jazz rock of 'Ever Ready Sunday', after which 'Crabshaw Don't Care' floats on a quiet jazz funk groove. It gets even more laidback with 'Sentimental Mode', on which the sax comes across as somewhat bluesy. 'Hearts Of Havana' obviously refers to the capital of Cuba, and brings about a Latin feeling. The title track is immediately the first single out, and it is sung by the German Max Mutzke. The theme is to find common ground, despite differences in outlook on life. 'Passaic' then swings out of the pan, and encourages dancing. 'Stanley' brings a light jazz ballad with blues. Then we return to jazz funk with '. 'Dennis The Menace' is the penultimate track and on 'The Little Boxer' Ford gives free rein to his guitar. A solid jazz rock CD, with trips to funk, blues and Latin, that will certainly appeal to fans of fusion.
