African-American David Williams used to have a career as an MC and DJ during the early days of rap & hip-hop (think of Sugar Hill Gang, Kurtis Blow and Grandmaster Flash) as a composer, producer and musical visionary. Like so many others, he sampled soul, jazz and funk from the seventies. Years later he got the idea to create the next Incognito or James Brown with a touch of hip-hop vibe. But instead it became the melodic, sophisticated and laid back funk of the Funktastic Players. Their debut album 'Generations' was released six years ago, and now they are already on their seventh CD. In addition to keyboard player David, this quartet consists of: saxophonist Marcus Mitchell, guitarist David Prince and keyboard player Kevin Croom. The music they bring is instrumental, but floats on smooth & chic eclectic rhythms, which testify to a playful joy. David provided the horn arrangements, mixed and produced the CD. Tracey Cutler joins in on sax, and Markia Wilkerson provides vocals. You actually get a “feel good” feeling that you can watch and listen to in the video clip of ‘Feeling Happy’. A nice discovery for those who love smooth jazz! |
