Guitarist Russ Hewitt brings the Spanish guitar back to life with this new album. And although he is not from Spain, but from Dallas, he knows how to bring that "Nuevo Flamenco" with heart and soul. Fourteen years ago he released his debut album "Bajo El Sol," and now I'm listening to his latest project. On it are 10 tracks, which he composed himself, and on which he is joined by his musical friends. The melodious 'Allende' opens the disc, transporting you to southern regions. Fellow guitarist Nuno Bettencourt is a guest on the title track, after which Marty Friedman (Megadeth) joins the free life on 'Vivir Libre'. For 'Amor Perdido' Russ got musical support from the Bucharest All-Star Orchestra, giving this a symphonic sound. And 'Luminous' gives you a blissfully relaxed feeling. Jorge Strunz, in turn, can be heard on the Brazilian-sounding 'Sunset Samba', followed by the gentle 'Luna', probably inspired by our Earthkeeper. 'Cubalia Café' of course brings the Cuban atmosphere to life, with help from Ardeshir Farah. And 'Serein' is bathed in a serene atmosphere, after which Vietnamese sitarist Tri Nguyen joins Russ in bringing an "east meets west" track with 'Return to Simitai'. This album is without a doubt a highlight of Russ' musical career. Highly recommended for those who love Spanish guitar, Nuevo Flamenco, or simply beautiful music! |
