Neo soul singer Rebecca Jade from San Diego has been performing with Sheila E. and Sir Elton John for years, as well as at jazz festivals around the world. However, she has never released a CD with her own songs. That has now changed, because this CD was released on October 14. She co-produced 10 songs with keyboard player and frequent songwriter partner Carnell Harrell (Boney James, Andra Day). Rebecca had been jotting down lyrics and poetry in a notebook since she was in school, but she'd never done anything else with it. These were now converted into personal lyrics to songs that contained R&B, jazz, hip-hop and pop. She also collaborated with Kyle Bolden (guitar), Raymond McKinley (bass) and Charles Streeter Sr. (drums). Her album opens with the second single 'Show Me', an R&B song on a hip-hop rhythm. 'Please Come Home' follows in a mid-tempo, after which saxophonist Dave Koz is a guest on the ballad 'My Reason'. After all, Rebecca is a guest on Dave's Christmas tour, along with Rick Braun, Peter White and Keiko Matsui. The first single 'What's It Gonna Be' already won 2 statuettes at the San Diego Music Awards, for "Best Music Video" & "Best R&B/Funk/Soul Song". On 'Drift Away' she sings about love, hope and strength, which is followed by 'Thankful'. Cheating is the order of the day on 'Beautiful Lies' and saxophonist Eric Darius lends a hand on the beautiful, sophisticated 'Bottle Up Magic'. 'Other Side of the Moon' precedes closing track 'Insane', which is a mixture of hip-hop and poppy jazz. So Rebecca Jade is a versatile singer, whose neo-soul will appeal to you if you like Sade, Anita Baker, etc. |
