Although American guitarist John Stein has released 18 highly acclaimed albums, his 19th and this latest project is particularly dear to his heart because he composed five of the album’s songs for his five grandchildren. And as with all of his recordings, Stein’s melodic, soulful guitar playing is central.

Stein has a storied career as a recording artist and educator. He released his first album in 1995 and was a professor at Berklee College of Music for 36 years. He hasn’t slowed down much since retiring from Berklee in 2020. He released ‘Serendipity’ in 2021, followed by ‘Lifeline’ in 2022, a two-CD compilation that summarized his nearly 30 years of recording. An album of new music, ‘No Goodbyes’, followed in 2023.

Stein was born and raised in Kansas City. He started playing guitar at age 7, and as a teenager he was part of rock bands. After school he moved to Vermont, where he lived for almost 10 years with a wood stove and no electricity. Nevertheless he went on to study at Berklee in Boston, where he also became a professor after graduating.

On this new CD John is assisted by Ed Lucie on bass and by drummer Mike Connors. The 5 tracks he composed for his grandchildren are opener ‘AJ’, ‘Kai’, ‘Ellie’, ‘Lidiana’ and ‘Elyas’. He also covers ‘Lover Man’, ‘Star Eyes’, Thelonious Monk’s ‘Misterioso’, Steve Swallow’s ‘Hullo Bolinas’, Wes Montgomery’s ‘Road Song’ and Wayne Shorter’s ballad ‘Infant Eyes’.

Best fun music from this talented jazz guitarist!
