I have been following British guitarist Peter White, who now lives in Los Angeles, for years and is one of the absolute top of smooth & contemporary jazz. Now his first album in 6 years was released on Valentine's Day, of which the first single 'Catalonia' is already on the playlists.

Peter composed and produced 10 songs about hope, determination and optimism for his 17th album. It is an antidote to the darkness we faced during the pandemic. After all, that was when this album was started. It links two other milestones in his career: his 50th anniversary as a professional musician, and the 35th anniversary of the release of his debut album 'Réveillez-vous'.

Peter is known for his guitar-driven instrumental music with a trademark that spans pop, Latin, R&B and jazz. He says about it: "I was working on the album mostly during the pandemic and in many cases the songs are deeper and more introspective than some of my more recent albums. I picked the title, ‘Light of Day,’ because it reminded me that yes, we all go through challenging times, but through the darkness, there is always light and better times ahead.” He plays guitar, bass, keyboards, accordion and did the programming on this album.

‘Light of Day’ opens with the up-tempo ‘Catalonia’, the aforementioned single, which is an energetic and exotic escapade through the northeast of Spain. ‘Cityscape’ features guest trumpeter Rick Braun, and Peter explains that its origins come from a walk he took through central London many years ago. Then leave all your worries behind for ‘Carefree’, on which the guitar sounds like a sitar mixed with some accordion, and David Dyson plays bass.

‘Till I See You Again’ refers to the sudden death of fellow contemporary jazz guitarist Nick Colionne in 2022. The pace increases for the energetic ‘Overdrive’ with the help of Marc Macisso on harmonica, and Ilya Serov on trumpet. Saxophonist Vincent Ingala takes his turn on the romantic ‘I Love You Still’, a song that Peter wrote with him in mind.

‘Dreaming of You’ brings a cheerful and optimistic note, after which ‘Odyssey’ is the longest song that Peter ever recorded. After all, it lasts more than 8 minutes and you can also hear drummer Eric Valentine and bassist Nate Phillips on it. Saxophonist Ernie Watts worked with Peter for the track ‘Enchanted’, followed by the title track, which closes. That song is about hope and determination.

A very beautiful album, on which all the songs sound fantastic! Peter I want more!
