We are writing day 3 of
this remarkable cruise. On the way to St. Thomas the day is packed with
events
and sessions. At 10:30 AM was the "Autograph Session" of Rick
Braun, Norman Brown, Warren Hill and Wayman Tisdale in Crow's Nest.
Alternately one could attend the "Music Clinic" hosted by
André Berry. André is the co-producer of Warren Hill's new album
"Pop Jazz". Warren had asked André to write
songs for his new album. André was touring with Dave Koz as his bass player
and his schedule was tight. But André reissued in working
out the songs on his Apple Powerbook during the drives between the
diverse venues. Often Dave Koz asked: "Do you do that
notebook-thing again?". André kept the time-line and the guests
received an usual gift. A pre-released CD of Warren's new album. André
Berry explained that his Apple Powerbook could substitute a whole studio
especially in connection with his sampled sounds. He plays these sounds
via a midi-keyboard with an one-octave range. On the picture André is
explaining how he composed a tune for Warren's album. Andre has a huge
knowledge in composing and producing. So when he hits the stage that's
only the final act in a long process. By the way multi-instrumentalist
André Barry was playing Bass, Keyboards and Drum
Programming on Warren's album.
At 02:00 PM I attended
"Behind The Instruments", interviews with Oleta Adams, Paul
Brown and Warren Hill. The artists revealed their personal life
histories with up and downs. It was quite interesting to listen to Oleta
who was playing piano in bars, hotel lounges and showrooms in
Kansas City for a long long time. When frontmen Roland Orzabal and Curt
Smith from the group "Tears For Fears" asked her to appear on
their 1989 "The Seeds of Love' album, video and European tour, that
was her final breakthrough.
On this day two
concerts were waiting for us ....
