Harlem, New York born and Grammy awarded singer
Patti Austin was graced by tremendous success in her solo career.
Especially during the 80's she had her most prolific hit making period.
She worked with legends like Michael Jackson (Off The Wall),
George Benson (Moody's Mood for Love), Luther Vandross (I'm
Gonna Miss You In The Morning),
Johnny Mathis (You Who Brought Me Love) or James Ingram (Baby,
Come to Me).
She recorded seventeen studio albums. Her newest
one is Sound Advice, which will be released this year at
Shanachie Entertainment. “Superlatives just don’t tell the story. Sure
she’s an amazing singer, but it’s the depth of feeling in Patti’s
heart and soul that she expresses through her music – that’s what the
whole world loves about Patti Austin,” says Danny Weiss, VP Jazz A&R
for Shanachie Entertainment.
For additional information about this brilliant
album read the notes below. When British pop and soul singer Des'ree
released You Gotta Be in 1994, she never expected that this
infectious song would have been so well received. Patti Austin soon
recognized the potential of this song and presented it as her
contribution to the 2003 album Church - Songs of Soul and
Inspiration. Powered by the Fire Choir her rendition is a firework
of Gospel music.
Patti Austin has written and recorded the Gospel
hymn By The Grace Of God in support of the project against
domestic violence. Vocals and piano in perfect harmony. Round And
Round is one of the Pop enhanced songs, Patti has created together
with keyboardist and producer Greg Phillinganes (Toto). Greg jazzed
up the song with some auto-tune effects.
According to the chronicle books The Rolling Stones
recorded You Can’t Always Get What You Want with the London
Bach choir, because a Gospel choir wasn't available at the time of the
recording. Patti Austin now formed the originally intended version
together with Lynne Fiddmont, Lamont Van Hook, and Fred White.
Paul McCartney wrote the title Let 'Em In
for the Wings' album Wings at the Speed of Sound (1976), a
reverence to his relationship. An easy going swinging song. Bob
Dylan's Gotta Serve Somebody finds a special rendition on this
album. Patti Austin and Greg Phillinganes show the world how this song
has to sound.
Don McLean's tribute to Vincent van Gogh's work
entitled Vincent was often covered. Patti Austin's more
sophisticated approach searches the depth of Vincent's personality.
From Brenda Russell's self-titled debut album (1979) Patti chooses A Little Bit
Of Love, true musicianship honored by a kindred spirit.
Bill Withers' popular hit Lean On Me is
newly interpreted in a more contemplative sense. The Jacksons' Give
It Up received a fresh Brazilian twist. Paul Anka's My Way
widely known by Frank Sinatra's rendition finds a new treat on Patti's
album. Hopefully not her final curtain. Depeche Mode's signature song
Enjoy The Silence is metamorphosed by Greg Phillinganes (keys)
and Trevor Lawrence (perc) to something extraordinary.
Patti Austin's cover album Sound Advice is
an outstanding project of an amazing singer, open-minded for popular
styles in her own multi-textured way always reinventing her attitude
to her craft.
