Under The Lake
is a project by Jayson Tipp (keyboardist, songwriter and
producer). The debut album was Dive In (1993), followed by
Up For Air (1995), People Together (2007)
and Jazz, Groove & Attitude (2018).
On his new album Your Horizon Too (2020) Jayson is
supported by sax player Quintin
Gerard W., bassist Nathan Brown, guitarist Patrick Yandall
and drummer Richard Sellers. The album contains two covers,
most of the songs however are originals written by Jayson
and in part together with Quintin.
Opener of the album is the title song It's Your Horizon
Too. The songs on this album are not a one-man-show but
a band at work. That said, the theme is multiplied and
performed by all band members, which is the charm of a live
band.
People Make The World Go Round was originally
recorded by the Stylistics in 1972. The strong attraction of
the melody has led to numerous new interpretations,
especially in smooth jazz, such as by Skinny Hightower, Bob
Baldwin, Ronny Smith, Buff Dillard, Richard Elliot,
Alexander Zonjic, Urban Jazz Coalition and more. Under The
Lake shows the band's inherent originality with in
particular this well-known melody.
Bridgetown is a cozy tune that let's you dream of
sunny beaches and palm trees. Wishing It All Away
is a snappy mid-tempo piece mainly performed on electric or
shall I say eclectic piano. Patrick Yandall is able to set
some outstanding highlights on this album with his guitar,
also on Last Week.
Side Two refers to the times when albums still had
two playable sides. Patrick Yandall and Quintin Gerard W.
are the core players with quality jazz guarantee. The title
You Forgot Your Ticket describes a situation that
can be surprising and uncomfortable for many. However, the
theme is not taken up onomatopoeically, everything remains
calm and in a relaxed atmosphere.
Diego Nuevo presents anew Quintin with his
sure-handed sax and guitarist Patrick Yandall delivering
some edgy riffs. Some of the tunes are melodically oriented,
Josie is undoubtedly one of them. Nevertheless, the
band members contribute here and there with short solos.
Some people will have noticed that keyboardist Tipp is the
driving force of the band, but remains largely in the
background. This changes in any case with This One Too.
Even his rare solo on this song requires attentive
listening.
Trip To The Grove stays in the typical lane of the
group with full-body presence of all members. Stealing
The Night inhales the nightly pulsing atmosphere of the
vivid city full of cultural places to enjoy.
Under The Lake delivers with Your Horizon Too a
contemporary jazz album which demands a careful listening to
catch the broad richness of musical structures. The album
only opens up to the listener who is ready to capture every
nuance.
