Chris
Davis is the driving force behind many smooth jazz projects.
His debut album in this genre was Focus (2020)
followed by After The Storm (2024), his first on
Trippin 'n' Rhythm Records. With bSide we experience a
completely different side of this master musician producer.
The label gave him free rein to realize his artistic
creativity. So the new album Colors is pure Chris
“Big Dog” Davis. The only exception is Black People Rise
Up featuring LaRhonda Angelisa as herald of the
message.
The album opens with Below Zero interlude, an
accumulation of keyboard sounds mixed with ethnic flute
sounds and throaty noises based on a groovy drum rhythm.
The distinctive rhythm loop is also a strong stylistic
element of Destiny. Chris skillfully switches
between stylistic elements of contemporary and cool jazz and
numerous instrumental sets, which combine perfectly to form
a large brilliant mosaic.
Kiss (Keep It Simple) is a keyboard contemplation
with a small Asian touch. Be A Star turns out to be
the groovy crown jewel of this collection. A casual rhythm
combines congenially with an easily flowing, memorable
melody.
You And I mixes two different stylistic elements,
techno and smooth jazz, to create a musical polyamalgam of
special appeal. With the title track at the latest, Davis is
on the level of a dancefloor hit. A gripping groove, a hooky
guitar riff and a ripping keyboard solo are the big
highlights.
Take Me is a sprinkle of New Age offset with dabs
of a whimsical soundtrack. Spanish Flos with
excellent Spanish flavor and Don't Let Go with the
special Davis-groove are recommended for intensive radio
use.
Black People Rise Up
featuring LaRhonda Angelisa is a powerful anthem that
celebrates Black empowerment and resilience. The song
emphasizes themes of unity, strength, and the importance of
standing together in the face of adversity. Through its
lyrics, it encourages listeners to embrace their identity,
acknowledge their history, and strive for progress and
justice. The energetic beat and passionate delivery further
amplify the message.
With the project bSide Chris Davis offers an astonishing
range of his creative power. Hopefully he will still have
plenty of opportunities to prove this in the future.
