Sergio Caputo born in Rome, Italy
already played with such illuminates like
Dizzy
Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Tony Scott, Mel Collins (King Crimson),
Tony Bowers (Simply Red), Enrico Rava and Danilo Rea. The range of
influences extends from Jazz to Pop. Sergio Caputo relocated to
California where he has written and produced "That Kind of
Thing". He describes his new project as "Cool" and "West Coast
Jazz", that means smooth jazz with a Latin flair.
The
album starts with Everything I do.
Sergio is performing an elegant guitar play. The arrangement is
uncomplicated and pleasing. Charles McNeal is accompanying Sergio on
sax. Charles McNeal, an alto, tenor,
soprano saxophonist is living in Oakland CA.
He
played with John Faddis, Wynton Marsalis, Leslie Drayton, McCoy
Tyner, Ray Obiedo, Dave Garabaldi, RAD, Brenda Boykin, Claire Dee,
Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers, Barbara Morrison,
Barbara Dennerlein, Jr. Mance, Bruce Forman, Mark Elf, Roberta
Flack, The Temptations, Ollie Woodson, Norman Conners, Jean Carne,
Curtis Olson, Peter Horvath, Jaz Sawyer, Boz Scaggs...."
Guess I Miss You Again reminds a
bit at a song of Tom Jones. Are you sharing my impressions? Sergio
is playing on all songs guitars, keyboards, bass (except Intimacy
and Jazzy Girl) and programming. On this tune his easy guitar
play is underlayered by a smooth samba rhythm.
Intimacy is featuring trumpist
Enrico Rava, the godfather of Italian jazz. Rava played in his life
all styles of jazz from free jazz, bebop to contemporary. His muted
trumpet is impressing.
Serenata Roja is a fantastic
excursion into Spanish music that kind of style predestinated for a
guitar like Sergio's one. Charles McNeal is supporting Sergio
masterly on his flute.
Like A Shooting Star is a
Latin-flavored guitar tune with a big pack of percussion. This
uptempo tune is showcasing Mike Olmes on muted trumpet.
Waiting For Your Love also
featuring trumpet player Mike Olmes has a hooking melody. I would
like that tune in first row. Rob Sudduth's solos on sax are
absolutely professional. Rob Sudduth is regularly playing with "Huey
Lewis and the News". Rob has written many of the horn arrangements
the News Brothers use in concert as well as "So Little Kindness" and
some of the songs the band is trying out in concert. Rob jammed for
about five years with Chris Hayes before joining the band on tour.
Rob has also played with Joe Louis Walker, Commander Cody, and Steve
Lucky and the Rhumba Bums.
My Lost Venues is a further
opportunity for Rob Sudduth to showcase his first class. Sergio is
so graceful to let Rob play the lead instrument and to support him
with some guitar riffs which is uplifting this song.
In The Madness Of My Dreams is a
nice interplay between Sergio's guitar and Mike Olmes' trumpet. The
bossa rhythm could tolerate some variations.
I Used To Be So Cool is
featuring Marty Wehner on trombone. He is a Berklee College of
Music alumnus whose resume is impeccable. The trombonist is a sought
after player who has played with some very big names in the music
industry and is pursued regularly for live performance gigs as well
as studio work. He has played with Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Woods,
Benny Carter, the Mingus Epitaph Orchestra, Tony Toni Tone, Wynton
Marsalis, Bob Weir and Rat Dog, the Joe Henderson Big Band, Natalie
Cole, Lavay Smith, Tito Puente, Pete Escovedo, Dave Ellis and more.
He played on Carlos Santana's song “The Game of Love” w/ Michele
Branch which won a Grammy.
Jazzy Girl is presenting anew
Enrico Riva on muted trumpet in his own way.
What
is that kind of thing? It's Sergio's idea to release not a guitar
album but a platform for some of the most professional players.
Something that makes it worth to review this unique album.
