Singer Ty Causey is the vocal alternative to
instrumental smooth jazz.
Many smooth jazz fans know him by his cooperation with
Najee on his album Morning Tenderness. Ty
started his own career in 2004 with the album
N-TYSING.
Love Notes (2005), Expressions (2007),
Body Language (2008), True Love In Motion
(2009), Down 2 Earth (2010), False Faces
(2012), and Cool In My Skin (2013) were the
follow-ups.
Ty has written, arranged and produced all songs on his
new album with some guest appearances of musicians on
selected tracks. The starting songs Bad Boy and
Step N2 Love have the typical R&B flavor with
drumprogrammed pattern, keyboard overtones and
additional chords.
A quick scan of the album recovers the jazzy Other
Side Of Town featuring Najee on alto saxophone.
While Najee applies the principle of elegant restraint,
Ty takes over the main part. A little scatting here and
more jazzy phrasing there.
Ty likes in particular the role of the charmer, which
especially flashes in pieces like Ordinary Guy
and No More Broken Hearts. Ty's
timbre is akin especially on Hold On, Do not Let Go
to
the legendary Frankie Beverly.
Cool In My Skins features guitarist Bobby Bruns,
who wasn't on my radar yet. Ty arranges his songs
with a lot of love and his instrumentalisation
is just perfect. Everything is of course only for the
purpose to give his impressive voice the right setting.
Anyone who loves R&B with a dash of smooth jazz, can
safely resort to this album.
