Virginia based bass player Christian de Mesones is since more than 40 years in music business. With his debut album They Call Me Big New York he lays the foundation for his own solo career.

He is supported by a large group of musicians recruited from his circle of friends and band. Among them are Nia Simmons, Carol Albert, Alfreda Gerald, Debora Galan (vocals), Eddie Baccus Jr., Rob Maletick (sax), Elliot Levine, Christopher Valentine (keyboards), Mike Gamble, Drew Davidsen (guitar), Jay Jones, Carl Anderson, Christopher Valentine (drums), Keith L. Anderson (EWI), Curtis McCain, Jesus Gonzales, Tom Teasley (percussion), Greg Boyer (trombone), Maurice Chevalier (trumpet, strings, drums), and Chao Tian (Yang Quin - Chinese Dulcimer).

The opening track Big Tall Wish is also the first single of the album, broadcasted by radio stations since January. The funky mid-tempo tune features lovely singer Nia Simmons backed by Christian's bass and Elliot Levine's keyboards.

Latin Jive REDUX seems to be inspired by the music of Carlos Santana. That begins with the percussion, goes over to Rob Maletick's precise sax injections and ends up with Drew Davidsen's crystal clear guitar riffs.

The interlude Shape Of Water featuring Keith L. Anderson on EWI is the introduction to the following track Sweetnight. Deborah Galan is undoubtedly the vocal star of this snappy and melodic tune. Good Old Days sways in the memories of the golden time. Eddie Baccus Jr. on soprano and alto sax and Rob Maletick on tenor sax bring back that groovy feeling.

Spirit is a highly addictive master piece finely tuned in harmony. For all radio programmers just what one needs. Hispanica has as the title already indicates a Spanish flavor. Main matador is Mike Gamble on guitar, while Debora Galan brings in additional local color with her singing in Spanish language.

Throb! is per definition a beat or sound with a strong, regular rhythm; pulsate steadily. This is a strutting and jamming tune for head boppers with the most furious impact by saxophonist Eddie Baccus Jr. and trombonist Greg Boyer.

Year Of The Dragon offers an interesting mixture of Chinese overhead with Chao Tian on the Yang Quin and some cool bass atmosphere in the style of Marcus Miller. The final Dekalb And Flatbush was recorded Live at VMFA (Virginia Museum Of Fine Arts) 2018. This is the signature sound of the group in full action!

Christian de Mesones' They Call Me Big New York is not the polished smooth jazz production which is a common sight these days. This album is the matured expression of a close-knit group that can look back on years of interaction and has developed a sure instinct for the essential. The extraordinary deserves your attention.
