De'Vine Soul - DS One
A
possible way to explore the music of a group is to visit the website.
De'Vine Soul's is a pretty one, flash-animated and the introducing
sound is impressing. Michael Watkins, bass-man of the group, has
founded the group as "Salvation Flyte" in 1996. Out of
Orlando, FL most-known by its Disney world areas De'Vine Soul is a
real entertainment act offering Jazz,
Latin, Neo-Soul, Gospel, R&B and Funk.
Their
debut album "DS One" was released in June 2004 and is
reflecting influences of groups like Incognito,
Tower of Power, Crusaders, Earth, Wind & Fire, Frankie Beverly
& Maze, Fourplay, Sheila E., Jeff Lorber, Joe Sample, Patrice
Rushen and Brand New Heavies.
Yes,
indeed. The first tune Places I've Been
sounds like a mixture of Incognito and Brand New Heavies. The
arrangement is tight and especially the horns section hits the points.
Patrece Bloomfield's vocals are strong and convincing. Jeanine Nesbit
masters the keyboards with elegance.
Devrick
Bell's smooth sax and Patrece Bloomfield's enchanting voice are
melting into Natural Love. John
Kastrinos' guitar is crying while Bill Moss and Devrick Bell's horn
section is crawling like a tiger in the dark.
All Thumbs
Blues is John Kastrino's special guitar piece. Greetings to
Carlos Santana. A tune with much expression.
My Interlude
is what it's titled. A short bridge.
Joe Sample's Carmel
was the first tune on his legendary solo album "Carmel"
(1979) with players like Hubert Laws, Paul Jackson Jr., Abraham
Laboriel or Paulinho Da Costa. Not easy to play these jazzy chords,
but De'Vine performs an awesome rendition.
Feelin' #1
is a funky groove written, arranged and performs by all members.
De'Vine's strength is undoubtedly live music.
Samba Wiago
(The World Is A Ghetto) is a Latin tune Santana couldn't perform
better. Guitar riffs, horn arrangement on a well-balanced Samba
rhythm. Absolutely groovin'!
What's Going On
is one of the most-played of Marvin Gaye. De'Vine's cover has an
excellent horn arrangement and also the other instrumental parts are
from the finest.
The last tune of the album Amazing
Graze is an instrumental alteration of all what I heard about
this song till now. Very creative and innovative.
This album is recommendable to all
friends of good smooth jazz. If you like horns arrangement of
Incognito here you find a perfect equivalence.
