Like many other musicians we have featured in our reviewer's special of Italian jazz music, Paolo Vivaldi can rightly be called a creative force in the field of theater, television, cinema and discography.

The famous Ennio Morricone once described his student as follows: “Paul is a great man who will be understood after some time. As usual, people are deaf ”.  After graduating as a composer from the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, he went on to devote himself with great success and numerous awards to cinema, television and theater.

The intimate album Our Life was created with the collaboration of Paolo Vivaldi (piano), Marco Guidolotti (soprano sax), Dario Rosciglione (double bass) and Alessandro Marzi (drums). Paolo has composed most of the tracks.

Paolo describes this project in the liner notes as follow: "Life is like a series of images that pass quickly from a train window from which emotions, joys, pains, hopes, disappointments, melancholy and happiness go up and down.

A journey that four musicians recount with the most precious gift they have received: music. This disc is dedicated to all those souls who want to get on our train of notes and want to share their life with us which, reflected in that window, becomes our life."

The album opens with the title song. Acoustically, one notices immediately that the arrangement was recorded without much technical finesse as one would expect from recordings of American smooth jazz performers. Pianist and saxophonist share the performance of the melody, which features a dramatic buildup.

The Dreamt Life offers a gentle ballad that essentially lives from Marco Guidolotti's soulful intonation of his soprano saxophone. In the introduction of Summer Storm, Paolo imitates the falling of the single raindrops that announce the upcoming event. Marco's sax interpretation gets into classic attitude and then slides into free jazzy realms.

My Best Friends fortunately finds its way back to a melodic area with velvety affinity. Brezza Marina lets you feel the breeze of the sea, which caresses the face tenderly. The title Mermaid seems rather random to me. Neither a reference to femininity or the sea can be recognized, rather the band caprices on the ecstasy of free interpretation.

An essential part of the album as the pieces Brando and Ginevra, Morning Walk, I'm Coming to You or The Rain of May deepen the impression of an album with a romantic focus.

The Paolo Vivaldi Cinematic Quartet pays attention for a style of melodic jazz, which is more commonly found in European cultural circles.
