Jóhann Ásmundsson

Jóhann Ásmundsson has worked as an engineer and session musician on many Icelandic albums. His playing can also been heard on early recordings of the band TODMOBILE and numerous other recordings. Joe was a member of STJÓRNIN/Heart 2 Heart along with Friðrik Karlsson.

Currently Joe is studying to become a qualified consultant for SAA, an organisation helping people with alcohol and drug abuse problems.
Johann Asmundsson plays mainly Sadowsky 5 string, Yamaha BB 1200 fretless, and the JA-Special.

The JA Special is a 4 string bass Joe made himself in 1981. It has been modifies several times. It is based on a Mighty Mite/Fender kit with EMG J-style pickups, Badass bridge and Schaller tuners. Originally clear laquered, but most of it has worn away.

Johann occasionally uses other bassguitars 4-6 string, but loves its Sadowsky and the JA-Special. Amplifiers and speakers vary a lot from a small BagEnd 1x12" through Redhead to Eden, normally with two 4x10" cabinets. Johann Asmundsson usually plugs straight into the mixing desk (in studios) through DI box, no effects. Live he occationally uses Boss pedals (Octaver/phaser).

He has been with Mezzoforte since its  beginning in ´77. Toured extensively with the band following the success of the hit "Garden Party"all over the world. The band has recorded 11 records over the years and has gained a world wide recognition for their music.

Residing in Reykjavik, Iceland he has been working in the studio and live with most of Iceland's contemporary musicians in jazz, pop and rock settings. Amongst them the group Gus Gus and members of that
groups solo albums. Started work on his own album some two years ago and slowly built up the album with mostly with his own compositions. Got help from Iceland's best known players who contributed their talent to the album. Is currently working on further recordings with Fredrik Karlsson (Mezzofortes guitar player) and studying in The Jazz college of
Iceland.

Johann Asmundsson has released in 2001 the album "So Low" at Passion Jazz. It contains 13 new instrumental fusion compositions. A review is to find at First View.
