For saxophonist Jackiem Joyner standstill is not a condition. No
wonder that he has shaped his solo career in a short period of time
with a multitude of releases. This Time Around
(2005), Baby Soul
(2007), Lil’ Man Soul (2008), Jackiem Joyner
(2010), Church Boy (2012), Evolve (2014) and
Main Street Beat (2017) are
signals of his creativity and quality.
In view of the decline of the music business in the classical sense,
it is vital for musicians to create new business areas and build up
their network with other musicians. On his new album Touch
(2019) Jackiem has invited guitarist Peter White and
flutist Najee, who are well known far beyond their genre. In addition he is supported by
JP Mourao (acoustic guitar), Kyle Bolden (electric guitar), Timothy
Bailey, D. Baker (various instruments), Dee Cole Laing, and Brittany
Frappier (vocals).
The romantic aspect of music seems to be a sought-after field of
activity for many musicians. Last Dance follows the same
musical line with a softly played soprano saxophone and Peter White's
lyrical approach on acoustic guitar.
The finger snipping, bass drum pulsed Sweetness is looking
for an energetic approach to reopening the topic. With a sophisticated
overdub, the saxophone harmony is skilfully built at its finest. On
Beautiful Seduction Jackiem is joined by JP Mourao on
acoustic guitar to a Latin-inspired serenade.
The title indicates it. When We concentrates on the romantic
relationship. Jackiem uses the reverb effect as a stylistic medium in
multifaceted layers. Reverb, overdub and softly performance are also
the main stylistic devices of Touch. Whether the result is
convincing or not ultimately depends on the radiance of the melody.
Lovers of glistening Fairytales will welcome the acoustic
version featuring Najee on the flute. The sweet tones of sax and flute
flutter like butterflies through the stardust filled air. When the
flower of love slowly unfolds, the secret devotee sends out his
message of passion. Secret Admirer captures this crackling
atmosphere of the first decisive weeks of its creation.
Secrets is the suitable title for a mysterious mood, from
which the tender melody develops. Jackiem has an innate ability for
scoring intense. Close 2 You, made by Jackiem alone, is a
brilliant proof for this talent. The heartfelt Kineen is
dedicated to late Dinea Kineen Smith, a musician who played with
Jackiem in the band Inkreese in their early days.
Too Good at Goodbye was originally written by James Napier,
Tor Hermansen, Mikkel Eriksen and Sam Smith, and performed by latter
singer for the album The Thrill of It All (2017). The deep
emotionality of gifted singer Sam Smith can only be guessed in
Jackiem's soprano sax version.
“This album is about romance,” Joyner explains of Touch. “I
wanted to give everyone something hip, smooth, and sexy at the same
time.” This musical direction is attained with fine accuracy. Give
romance a chance.
